Teletherapy in a Time of Crisis and Hope
Video: Practical Wisdom and Step-by-Step Guidance
I am deeply humbled by the work we are called to do in these times. And we’re doing it in unfamiliar circumstances—online from our homes. Our clients no longer have the sense of safety that is part of our physical office space or the comfort of our regulating presence. But along with these challenges are incredible opportunities. It’s my hope that the insights in this 12-minute video— drawn from my own experience and that of other therapists—are helpful for you.
To be in the present moment is something we talk about—it’s what we do as EMDR therapists. But these perilous times are requiring much more of us. We’re being called upon to be healers in the fullest sense. Our work is about healing broken hearts. It’s about recovering parts of self from previous traumas that have been dormant for years—parts that are coming to the surface perhaps for the first time. It’s about helping clients navigate loss, economic uncertainty and loneliness. It’s about going on with life without someone you love in it—even without saying goodbye. It’s about cultivating love and compassion for ourselves, for others and for our clients.
What’s Your Teletherapy Experience?
Please take a minute to let me and your colleagues know about your teletherapy experiences. Ask your questions. Tell your story. We all benefit when we share examples of how we’re adapting—and how our clients are responding—to therapy in an age of pandemic.
