Healing the Wounds of Attachment & Rebuilding Self • Tampa Florida

February 7 - February 8

Healing the Wounds of
Attachment & Rebuilding Self:

An Advanced Clinical Course

This advanced workshop is for clinicians who are seeking to broaden their skills working with developmental trauma and attachment issues. As is often the case when we’re working with attachment, the difficulties that challenge clients in their lives are the same ones they bring to the therapeutic process itself. We will explore how to use these challenges as moments of opportunity to work through the childhood wounding, making secure attachment possible in adulthood. We will also address the “art and timing” of EMDR therapy, prioritizing what to work on as a case evolves and issues shift from foreground to background and vice versa. We will also expand on the therapist’s understanding and application of clinical interweaves for navigating the delicate waters of attachment, facilitating a rebuilding of self in this transformational process.

Clinical challenges like these have inspired me for the last 40 years. As an EMDR Evangelist, I’ve worked with leading clinicians and innovators in EMDR, trauma treatment and somatic healing to expand the understanding of EMDR as a comprehensive psychotherapy . As a therapist, I’ve refined the application of EMDR to enhance its effectiveness in repairing attachment injuries, resolving negative life patterns rooted in complex trauma and other challenging clinical cases. As a trainer and consultant, I’ve traveled throughout the US and around the world to help ensure that therapists everywhere have the understanding, skill and confidence they need to bring the transformative healing power of EMDR Psychotherapy to the clients they see.

You’ll cover which approaches are most effective—and appropriate—based on a client’s attachment style and you’ll find out about predictable pitfalls and how to avoid them. You can start using what you learn in your clinical work right away.

Here are Just a Few of the Skills, Approaches, and Insights You’ll Take Away from this Advanced Training

We will discuss the different attachment styles, identifying specific patterns of response that accompany each; addressing the specific clinical challenges both in and out of processing.

We will learn to recognize the hallmarks of a “good enough” attachment relationship with our clients and explore how that sets the groundwork for helping the client approach this unchartered emotional territory – some of which is outside the domain of language and explicit memory networks.

Through lecture, discussion, videotape and a live demonstration, you will learn how to:

  • Describe the four adult attachment styles and identify two or more patterns of response that correlate with each style;
  • Design an AIP-informed conceptualization of the client’s problem and an agreed-upon treatment plan by identifying formative attachment experiences where the client learned to respond using these identified patters;
  • Identify the different attachment states both in and out of processing bringing attention to the client’s sensory experience in the moment;
  • Compare core affective and defensive affective response;
  • Prepare a plan to develop the client’s capacity to successfully integrate more adaptive relationship skills into their current lives;
  • Apply Clinical Interweave Categories (CIC) to navigate moment to moment processing demands and to address developmental deficits and facilitate repair; and
  • Identify at least two ways to modify the three-pronged protocol of past, present, and future to address ongoing clinical demands of a case.
